Residency in Calgary

For the past two weeks I have been settling in to work with three small schools. Our initial planning began almost a year ago in anticipation of upcoming AFA grant applications. Each school applied. Only one school received matching AFA funding. However, the other two schools continued with the residency anyway, with the full costs assumed by the Parent Advisory Council. The schools are Rosemont, Briar Hill and Hillhurst.

Salmon Return

This past fall I participated in an investigation and harvest of salmon returning to the side channel in the Chemainus River with the students from St. Joseph's. Back in the studio we continued to investigate in clay.

Back in Calgary

in a 3 month residency. We are half way through. Since January we have been exploring ceramic hand-building, batik soft sculpture, fabric collage stories, sewing, plasticine settings, drawing from collections and kinetic wire sculpture to expand the languages of learning and representation available to both students and teachers.

what was most beneficial to you and your practice?

"...the opportunity to have a hands-on experience with the students. It's much easier to do again when you know how to do something. Also, Ewa shared with us the amounts, brands and where to purchase - this helps us to know how and where to begin to do these projects again. We have done batik and felting [on our own] again and the projects were successful."
